Why Your AC Doesn’t Cool

What you least want on a hot summer day is an air conditioner that can’t cool. There can be several reasons behind AC not cooling problem, some of which are technical faults and some are non- technical.

Most common reasons behind AC not cooling are:

Clogged air filter split system

If the air conditioner does not cool, the air filter might be clogged. In such case, air cannot flow through properly which greatly reduces the cooling capacity of the air conditioner. How to clean the filter:

  1. Turn unit off
  2. Open front of indoor unit
  3. Remove filters
  4. Wash with garden hose, dirty side first then clean side
  5. Shake filters of excess water and reinstall straight away

DO NOT VACUMN OR BRUSH FILTERS AS THIS WILL DAMAGE THE FIBRES.

Clogged air filter ducted system

  1. Locate ceiling egg crate grill, you may need a ladder to access
  2. Lower hinged ceiling grill, slide out filter frame
  3. Filter construction in most cases is similar to a fly screen
  4. Place the filter against the outside wall, dirty side facing the wall, and wash with a garden hose jet spray, uniformly from top to bottom
  5. Turn filter around and again wash as described
  6. Put filter on its angle and allow to drain
  7. Shake filter of remain water and reinstall
  8. Filer bust be reinstalled bead side down or in the direction shown on the filter assembly

DO NOT VACUMN OR BRUSH FILTERS AS THIS WILL DAMAGE THE FIBRES.

Dirty coils

If the air conditioner is not cold enough the condenser coils may be dirty and loaded with debris. In an AC, the condenser is like a radiator that dissipates heat (which was removed from the air). The condenser coil must be clean to dissipate heat outside. As the coils get dirtier the air conditioner becomes less efficient, which makes it work harder to cool the room. If the coils are dirty enough, the unit will never be cold enough and will not be able to cool the room. Call Gecko Air for a service. Advise

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.

Insufficient refrigerant

The refrigerant circulates through the evaporator coils and cools the air flowing over it and eventually sends cool air into the room. So when the level of this refrigerant becomes insufficient, the AC fails to cool. At this stage call Gecko Air for refrigerant leak repair. Advise

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.

Faulty compressor

A compressor is the heart of an air conditioning unit which is responsible for cooling/heating your room. If the air conditioner does not cool, the compressor might be defective. The compressor is a motor which compresses the refrigerant and circulates the refrigerant through the evaporator and condenser coils. If the compressor goes bad the cooling cycle does not start and the AC fails to cool. Call Gecko Air for diagnosis, and repair. Advise

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.

Faulty thermostat

A thermostat is a sensor that senses the room temperature and hints the compressor to start or stop the cooling/heating cycle. If the thermostat is defective the air conditioner does not cool or may cool continuously. Call Gecko Air for diagnosis, and repair. Advise

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.

Faulty AC Remote

There can also be a situation when the remote fails. Things to do before placing a service call:

  1. Replace the remote control batteries
  2. Inspect the control, locate and press the reset button.

If problem persists call Gecko Air and advise:

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.

Defective Parts

The other possible technical reasons behind AC not cooling can be a faulty run capacitor of the compressor, defective control board, bad thermistor, choked capillary, faulty motor etc. Call Gecko Air for diagnosis, and repair. Advise

  1. Make of unit
  2. Model number, located on the indoor unit right hand side, or outdoor unit above the connections.
